Fantasy Baseball SP Roundup 7/10: The Hunter & The Hunted

Welcome to the SP Roundup, my daily fantasy baseball article reviewing every starting pitcher's performance from every Friday game. I apologize for the jokes written in my delirium in advance. Hunter Greene vs. Chicago Cubs

  • Performance: 7.0 IP, 0 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BB, 12 Ks, 14 Whiffs, 37% CSW, 93 pitches (W)
  • Analysis: Greene dominated with triple-digit heat, allowing him to get away with a sub-60% strike rate on sliders. He'll need to find the zone more with his slider to continue pitching this well.

Hunter Brown vs. Texas Rangers

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 4 Hits, 5 BB, 4 Ks, 10 Whiffs, 29% CSW, 98 pitches (ND)
  • Analysis: Brown's command was poor, with only sinkers eclipsing 60% strikes. His four-seamer decline is a concern, as it was his most-used pitch last year. Without those pitches dominating, he becomes easily exploited.

Nolan McLean vs. Boston Red Sox

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 0 ER, 5 Hits, 2 BB, 7 Ks, 8 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 98 pitches
  • Analysis: McLean's offspeed pitches disappeared, but his Ras Pack stepped up for 75% strikes and 35% CSW. He's had a stretch of eight outings with a 2.35 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 26% K%.

Kyle Leahy vs. Atlanta Braves

  • Performance: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 1 Hit, 0 BB, 2 Ks, 3 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 44 pitches (ND)
  • Analysis: Leahy's outing was cut short by rain. He was throwing harder and finding strikes, but his lack of command is a concern.

Chris Sale vs. St. Louis Cardinals

  • Performance: 3.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 Hits, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 9 Whiffs, 40% CSW, 43 pitches (ND)
  • Analysis: Sale's outing was also cut short by rain. He enters the All-Star Break at full health and will exit it fully rested.

Sean Burke vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

  • Performance: 7.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 Hits, 0 BB, 9 Ks, 16 Whiffs, 30% CSW, 98 pitches
  • Analysis: Burke has fully broken out with an elite four-seamer and has a 1.69 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 34% K% across his last five starts.

Sonny Gray vs. New York Mets

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 2 Whiffs, 25% CSW, 91 pitches
  • Analysis: Gray struggled against LHB, allowing more than one run just thrice in his last 13 starts.

Parker Messick vs. Miami Marlins

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 1 Hit, 4 BB, 1 K, 8 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 91 pitches
  • Analysis: Messick's reduced velo and lack of secondary support were concerning. The All-Star Break couldn't come at a better time as he may be feeling some fatigue.

Cal Quantrill vs. Houston Astros

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 1 BB, 1 K, 2 Whiffs, 16% CSW, 79 pitches
  • Analysis: Quantrill's sinker/cutter combination worked well, but he needs to improve his strikeout rate.

Ryan Weathers vs. Washington Nationals

  • Performance: 5.1 IP, 1 ER, 6 Hits, 0 BB, 6 Ks, 11 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 91 pitches
  • Analysis: Weathers emphasized secondaries and dropped his four-seamer/sinker usage. His long ball issues have vanished, and he's throwing plenty of strikes.

Robbie Ray vs. Colorado Rockies

  • Performance: 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 Hits, 6 BB, 4 Ks, 9 Whiffs, 15% CSW, 100 pitches (ND)
  • Analysis: Ray's slider is missing, and he's relying on ineffective breakers. I hope he figures it out before it all falls apart.

Tanner Gordon vs. San Francisco Giants

  • Performance: 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 8 Hits, 1 BB, 1 K, 3 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 81 pitches (ND)
  • Analysis: Gordon's changeup was solid, but his heater allowed five hits and a dinger.

Shota Imanaga vs. Cincinnati Reds

  • Performance: 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 14 Whiffs, 27% CSW, 102 pitches
  • Analysis: Imanaga's homer-prone nature made the Great American Smallpark a scary place. He avoided damage on his tertiary offerings.

Zack Littell vs. New York Yankees

  • Performance: 4.0 IP, 1 ER, 5 Hits, 0 BB, 5 Ks, 8 Whiffs, 23% CSW, 69 pitches (ND)
  • Analysis: Littell's slider is more of a cutter, and he needs to improve his strikeout rate.

Jack Flaherty vs. Philadelphia Phillies

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 2 Hits, 3 BB, 6 Ks, 16 Whiffs, 33% CSW, 86 pitches
  • Analysis: Flaherty's command has improved, and he's earning co-shares of the Gallows Pole without increased velo.

Eduardo Rodriguez vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 7 Hits, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 9 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 87 pitches
  • Analysis: E-Rod's four-seamers, changeups, and cutters are commanding, and he's a strong All-Star candidate.

Nick Martinez vs. Seattle Mariners

  • Performance: 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 4 Hits, 1 BB, 1 K, 6 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 70 pitches
  • Analysis: Martinez's changeup and Ras Pack approach were effective, but his lack of strikeouts is concerning.

Aaron Nola vs. Detroit Tigers

  • Performance: 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 2 BB, 8 Ks, 14 Whiffs, 31% CSW, 84 pitches
  • Analysis: Nola's success is usually accompanied by increased fastball velo and improved heater command.

Shane Bieber vs. San Diego Padres

  • Performance: 4.2 IP, 2 ER, 6 Hits, 3 BB, 4 Ks, 11 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 97 pitches
  • Analysis: Bieber found an extra tick of velo and realized he shouldn't throw his changeup so often.

Kyle Hurt vs. Arizona Diamondbacks

  • Performance: 1.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 Hits, 1 BB, 1 K, 4 Whiffs, 22% CSW, 36 pitches
  • Analysis: Hurt's outing was cut short, and he needs to improve his strikeout rate.

Sandy Alcantara vs. Cleveland Guardians

  • Performance: 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 Hits, 0 BB, 8 Ks, 13 Whiffs, 32% CSW, 99 pitches
  • Analysis: Alcantara's Ras Pack has taken over, but he's lost his changeup feel recently.

Brandon Young vs. Kansas City Royals

  • Performance: 7.0 IP, 3 ER, 8 Hits, 1 BB, 5 Ks, 10 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 85 pitches
  • Analysis: Young has been the poor man's Sean Burke, deploying an underrated heater and mediocre secondaries.

Grayson Rodriguez vs. Minnesota Twins

  • Performance: 5.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BB, 0 Ks, 8 Whiffs, 19% CSW, 79 pitches
  • Analysis: GrayRod's four-seamer and changeup usage didn't work, and he needs to improve his strikeout rate.

Luinder Avila vs. Baltimore Orioles

  • Performance: 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 7 Hits, 3 BB, 3 Ks, 9 Whiffs, 28% CSW, 96 pitches
  • Analysis: Avila and Andrew Alvarez have similar pitching styles, but Avila needs to find ways to lean on his breakers.

JP Sears vs. Toronto Blue Jays

  • Performance: 4.1 IP, 3 ER, 6 Hits, 1 BB, 3 Ks, 8 Whiffs, 24% CSW, 72 pitches
  • Analysis: Sears' changeup-driven arsenal failed to excel.

Zebby Matthews vs. Los Angeles Angels

  • Performance: 6.0 IP, 4 ER, 9 Hits, 2 BB, 3 Ks, 11 Whiffs, 22% CSW, 102 pitches
  • Analysis: Matthews' heater allowed five hits and a dinger, and he needs to maintain his velo.

Luis Castillo vs. Tampa Bay Rays

  • Performance: 5.0 IP, 4 ER, 9 Hits, 1 BB, 4 Ks, 8 Whiffs, 26% CSW, 91 pitches
  • Analysis: Castillo's heater was down to 95 mph, and he needs to improve his slider command.

  • Analysis: Civale's opener approach didn't work, and he has a 10.17 ERA and 2.13 WHIP across his last six outings.

Game of the Day: Logan Gilbert vs. Griffin Jax

  • Analysis: Gilbert's hot streak and Jax's potential breakout are the highlights of this game.
